How to Lubricate your Garage Door

garage-door-lubrication

We don’t always think about garage door maintenance unless we see a problem. The garage door may start to make noises or stop working as a result. As part of the garage door’s maintenance, you can avoid this by lubricating it every six months. It will then move smoothly and operate correctly. This blog will give you step by step instructions on how to lubricate your garage door.

First, Do These Maintenance Tasks Prior to Lubricating Your Garage Door

Before you begin, you must:

  1. Tighten any and all bolds, but be sure not to over-tighten them.
  2. Replace any worn out parts
  3. Check the rollers. Unsealed bearings will accumulate dust, and eventually break down.
  4. Check the hinges for wear. The door may bind in each section when opening if the hinges are worn.
  5. Tighten the garage door opener’s chain. You will hear slapping noises and the garage door may jerk.

You can now start lubricating your door.

Steps on How to Lubricate Garage Doors

1. Close the Garage Door

Close the garage door first to thoroughly lubricate. Be sure to turn off the power of the opener before starting the procedure.

2. Clean the Tracks by Wiping off Dust and Debris

Garage door tracks can accumulate dust and debris. They must be cleaned to allow the rollers move smoothly. You should not lubricate the tracks. The roller will be less able to move if you do. Start by vacuuming up any dust or debris. After vacuuming, use a wet rag to wipe off any dust that remains. You can use automotive brake cleaner if the dirt or grime is very stubborn.

3. Lubricating Hinges & Rollers

After cleaning the tracks, you can begin lubricating the garage door. Grease each hinge. Then lubricate all the rollers. They are located next to the hinges and connected along the track. Be sure to thoroughly lubricate all the rollers, including the ball bearings.

4. Lubricating Bearing Plates & Springs

The springs and bearing plates are located on top of the garage. Start applying grease with a stepladder. Open the garage door and spread the grease around evenly.  You will need to replace garage door springs that are worn. Hiring a professional is advised as it can be hazardous to do this yourself.

5. Lubricating Top Rail & Arm Bar

Next, lubricate both the arm bar and top rail. The chain travels along the top rail, which runs parallel to ceiling in garage. The arm bar that connects the top rail to the door can be found here. These parts require lubrication to ensure smooth operation.

6. Lubricating the Lock

Last but not least, you should lubricate your garage door lock. The garage door lock will not rust and you can lock and unlock it easily.

Connect the power supply to the door when you’re done. Test the door again to ensure it works properly. Inspect the door as it opens and shuts. Listen for any noises. If applying grease doesn’t work, you may need to call a garage door repair service.
